What Is Home Compostable Packaging? Everything You Need to Know

Walk down any supermarket aisle and you'll spot a green leaf, a recycling arrow, or the word "compostable" on packaging more often than not. It looks reassuring. The trouble is, these terms get used almost interchangeably by brands even though they mean genuinely different things, and in the UK, that gap between claim and reality has become significant enough that DEFRA received over 4,000 consumer complaints about misleading environmental claims between 2024 and 2025 alone.

So what does "home compostable" actually mean, how is it different from "industrially compostable" or simply "biodegradable," and how do you tell a genuine claim from a green-washed one? Here's the full picture.

Home Compostable vs Industrial Compostable: The Difference That Actually Matters

This is the single most important distinction, and the one most packaging labels blur.

Industrial composting facilities operate at controlled temperatures of around 55 to 70°C, with regular aeration and monitored humidity, conditions no back garden compost heap can replicate. Packaging certified only for industrial composting is designed around those conditions specifically. Put it in your own compost bin at home, where temperatures typically sit at a much gentler 20 to 30°C, and it can sit there for months or years without meaningfully breaking down.

Genuinely home compostable packaging is tested and certified to break down under those cooler, ambient home conditions instead, with at least 90% of the material required to degrade within 12 months in a standard home compost environment. That's a materially different (and harder) standard for a material to meet, which is exactly why relatively few packaging types actually qualify for it.

The practical takeaway: if packaging is only labelled "compostable" with no further detail, assume it means industrially compostable unless stated otherwise. Very few UK households have access to industrial composting facilities, so in practice that packaging is likely headed for general waste regardless of the label.

What About "Biodegradable" and "Recyclable"?

These two get folded into the same conversation constantly, but neither means the same thing as home compostable.

"Biodegradable" is the vaguest of the terms. It has no legally defined timeframe or testing standard attached to it in most contexts, technically, almost everything is biodegradable eventually, including conventional plastic, just potentially over hundreds of years. A label that only says "biodegradable" tells you almost nothing useful about how long it will actually take to disappear or under what conditions.

"Recyclable" is a different claim entirely: it means a material can theoretically be reprocessed into something new, not that it breaks down naturally. Many supplement tubs run into a practical problem here too. Even if the main tub is technically recyclable, the lid, scoop, and inner seal are frequently made from different plastic types that most kerbside recycling schemes can't sort or process together, so the whole unit often ends up in general waste in practice, recyclable claim notwithstanding.

The Certification That Actually Means Something: OK Compost HOME

Given how loosely these terms get used, the only reliable way to verify a genuine home compostable claim is via third-party certification, and the benchmark here is TÜV Austria's OK compost HOME scheme.

Established in 2003, it was the first certification of its kind anywhere, and it's since formed the basis for several national standards, including Australia's AS 5810 and France's NF T51800. To earn it, a product must meet the baseline EN 13432 standard and then pass additional testing specific to home conditions: biodegradation testing at 20 to 30°C, disintegration testing to confirm it physically breaks into small fragments rather than persisting as visible plastic, and ecotoxicity testing to confirm nothing harmful is released into the soil as it breaks down.

If packaging carries this certification (look for the OK compost HOME seal specifically, not just a generic leaf icon or the word "eco" printed somewhere), you have genuine, tested assurance it will do what it claims in an ordinary home compost bin.

The Bioplastic Trap: Why "Plant-Based" Doesn't Mean Home Compostable

One of the most persistent sources of confusion is PLA, a bioplastic derived from plant sources like corn starch, widely marketed as an eco-friendly plastic alternative. It sounds like it should compost easily at home. It doesn't.

PLA only breaks down under genuine industrial composting conditions. In a landfill, or in an ordinary home compost bin, it behaves essentially like conventional plastic, with some estimates suggesting it can take anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years to decompose in those environments. The deeper problem is infrastructure: the vast majority of PLA packaging never actually reaches an industrial composting facility in the first place, so despite the "plant-based" framing, most of it ends up doing exactly what regular plastic does, sitting in landfill or contaminating recycling streams it was never designed for.

This is precisely why material matters as much as the compostable claim itself. Paper-based packaging doesn't rely on specialised industrial infrastructure to break down; it's a simple, well-understood material that composts under genuinely ordinary conditions, which is a meaningfully different proposition to a bioplastic that only works under conditions most of it will never actually reach.

Why This Has Become Such a Hot Topic in 2024–2025

Regulators and retailers have started catching up with this confusion. UK Trading Standards audits found that more than 60% of biodegradable product claims reviewed were non-compliant or lacked credible supporting evidence. In response, major UK retailers have tightened their requirements: Tesco now requires third-party certification for any biodegradability or compostability claim on products it stocks, and Co-op specifically demands TÜV OK Compost or EN 13432 verification before allowing the word "compostable" on packaging at all. WRAP, the UK's Waste and Resources Action Programme, has also published formal guidance aimed at reducing exactly this kind of consumer confusion.

In short, the packaging industry is being pushed toward the same standard consumers should already be applying themselves: don't take "eco" claims at face value, look for the certification behind them.

How to Actually Compost Home Compostable Packaging

If you've got genuinely certified home compostable packaging, using it correctly helps it break down as intended:

Tear or shred it into smaller pieces before adding it to your compost bin or heap. Smaller surface area means the microorganisms responsible for breaking it down can work through it faster. If there's any tape, label, or sticker on it that isn't part of the certified material itself, remove that first, as it likely won't compost with the rest.

Home compostable packaging generally counts as a "brown" (carbon-rich) material, so balance it with "green" nitrogen-rich waste like vegetable peelings or grass clippings for a healthy compost mix. And be patient: even genuinely home compostable material can take several months, and sometimes closer to a year, to fully disappear, particularly in a cooler or less actively managed compost heap.
