Frequently Asked Questions
What does elemental magnesium mean?
Elemental magnesium is the actual amount of pure magnesium in a supplement, not the total weight of the compound. Magnesium is bonded to another substance, in our case glycine, to make it stable and easy to absorb. So 1,000mg of magnesium glycinate does not mean 1,000mg of magnesium. It's worth checking the elemental amount on the label so you know exactly how much magnesium you're getting.
What does pure and unbuffered mean?
Unbuffered means our magnesium glycinate isn't padded out with cheaper fillers like magnesium oxide. Some brands "buffer" their magnesium with oxide to bulk up the dose at a lower cost. Magnesium oxide absorbs poorly and is more likely to cause stomach upset. Pure and unbuffered means every capsule is 100% magnesium bisglycinate, nothing else. This keeps absorption high and digestion gentle.
Can you overdose on magnesium?
It's very rare to overdose on magnesium from food or a standard supplement dose if your kidneys are working normally. Taking too much as a supplement can cause mild side effects like loose stools, nausea or stomach cramps. Serious magnesium toxicity is uncommon and usually only affects people with kidney problems or those on very high doses. UK guidance advises against taking more than 400mg of supplemental magnesium a day without medical advice. If you have kidney disease or take regular medication, check with your doctor before starting a new supplement.
What is magnesium glycinate used for?
Magnesium glycinate supports normal muscle function, a calm nervous system, and a reduction in tiredness and fatigue. It also contributes to normal psychological function and helps maintain the body's electrolyte balance. Many people choose glycinate because it's gentler on the stomach than other forms.
When is the best time to take magnesium glycinate?
Magnesium glycinate can be taken in the evening or before you to go to sleep (We suggest 1 hour before bed). If it causes any stomach upset, try taking it with food/dinner.
How much magnesium glycinate should I take a day?
The UK and EU reference amount for magnesium is 375mg a day. This is the official Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) used on food and supplement labels, including ours. We advise 1-2 capsules per day. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, speak to your doctor before adding a new supplement.
What's the difference between magnesium glycinate and other forms, like citrate or oxide?
Magnesium glycinate is bonded to the amino acid glycine, which makes it well absorbed and gentle on the stomach. Magnesium citrate is also well absorbed but has more of a laxative effect at higher doses. Magnesium oxide is cheap and common but poorly absorbed, with more of the dose passing straight through you. Glycinate is generally the better choice if you want an effective, everyday supplement without digestive side effects.
